English

Intent:

At Saltash Community School, the English curriculum affords our students the opportunity to explore and understand the influence that Cornwall has had on great writers, before broadening their horizons to consider the rich and diverse fiction and non-fiction of the wider world. Whether our students are exploring how the windswept and eerie Bodmin Moor hypnotised du Maurier or analysing how Marlantes exposes the brutality of the Vietnam War in ‘Matterhorn’, they will approach each text with curiosity and empathy and they will:

  • Be exposed to a wide range of texts and these texts will be academically and emotionally challenging.
  • Be expected to discuss and debate writers’ craft and complex critical theories with their teachers and their peers.
  • Have the opportunity to explore their own interests and passions through constructing their own fiction and non-fiction compositions.
  • Learn to write clearly, fluently and accurately, showing flair and originality.
  • Take pride in speaking and writing using standard English and a formal register.
  • Develop cultural capital that will help to remove barriers to achievement in school, future learning and the world of work.
