French

Intent

Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. At Saltash, we want to broaden pupils’ horizons and encourage them to step beyond familiar cultural boundaries, to develop new ways of seeing the world.

In Languages, we will:
  • Enable all students to develop conversational skills in both French and German by the end of Year 9
  • Teach using the EPI approach imitating the natural language learning process when acquiring our mother tongue
  • Teach core grammar and vocabulary so that students can manipulate language effectively
  • Allow students to become polyglots by offering two languages at KS3, KS4 and 5 if students wish so
  • Develop students’ oracy and literacy, through extended writing, reading, translation and engaging with original texts while teaching communication for real-life situations and topics of interest to our learners
  • Build cultural capital by exploring the societies and traditions in francophone and German speaking countries
  • Create independent learners who can express their opinions accurately and appropriately in a foreign language.
