Type of qualification: Technical Award

The Level 1/Level 2 Cambridge National in Health and Social Care is aimed at students aged 14-16 years and will develop knowledge, understanding and practical skills that would be used in the health and social care sectors. You will study the key aspects of health and social care and have the opportunity to apply what you learn through a number of practical experiences. This will involve the studying of two mandatory units and one optional unit, completed over years 10 and 11. The mandatory unit R032 is an external examination. The paper is 1 hour and 15 minutes in length.


In year 10 you will complete the following two Units - unit R032 and unit R034 -

1. Unit R032: Principles of care in health and social care settings:

This unit is assessed by an external examination and totals 40 % of the overall grade achievement. In this unit you will learn about the key topics that are important when caring for and protecting people in health and social care. The following four topics underpin all Non-Examined Assessments and are therefore taught at the beginning of year 10 and at the end of the course in year 11 in preparation for the external examination. The examination is 1 hour and 15 minutes in length and is externally marked.

Topics include:
  • Topic Area 1 - The rights of service users in health and social care settings
  • Topic Area 2 - Person-centred values
  • Topic Area 3 - Effective communication in health and social care settings
  • Topic Area 4 - Protecting service users and service providers in health and social care settings

2. Unit R034: Creative and therapeutic activities:

This unit is assessed by a Set Assignment and totals 30% of the overall achievement grade. In this unit you will research therapies and learn about how they can benefit people. You will also learn about the benefits of creative activities, and you will plan and deliver a creative activity to a group or individual.

Topics include:
  • Topic Area 1 Therapies and their benefits
  • Topic Area 2 Creative activities and their benefits
  • Topic Area 3 Plan a creative activity for individuals or groups in a health or social care setting
  • Topic Area 4 Deliver a creative activity and evaluate your own performance

Assessment:

In year 10, the Assessment comprises:

  • 2 x internal Knowledge Checks.
  • 1 x set assignment - Unit R034. This is internally marked and externally moderated.
  • 1 x mock for Unit R032.

Homework:

This is set weekly and consists of various tasks based on classroom learning. These are all in the Knowledge Organiser, distributed to all students at the start of the course and completed in an A5 homework book which are collected weekly for checking by the teacher.


In year 11 you will complete your final set assignment - Unit R033, and prepare for the May/June external examination - Unit R032.

1. R033: Supporting individuals through life events

This unit is assessed by a Set Assignment and totals 30% of the overall achievement grade. In this unit you will learn about growth and development through the life stages. You will also learn how to understand the needs of individuals who have been affected by life events and how to recommend support to meet their needs.

  • Topic Area 2 Impacts of life events
  • Topic Area 3 Sources of support

2. Unit R032: Principles of care in health and social care settings 

This unit is assessed by an external examination and totals 40% of the overall achievement grade. In this unit you will learn about the key topics that are important when caring for and protecting people in health and social care.

Topics include:
  • Topic Area 1 - The rights of service users in health and social care settings
  • Topic Area 2 - Person-centred values
  • Topic Area 3 - Effective communication in health and social care settings
  • Topic Area 4 - Protecting service users and service providers in health and social care settings

Assessment:

In year 11, the Assessment comprises:

  • 1 x set assignment - Unit R033. This is internally marked and externally moderated.
  • 3 x mock examinations for Unit R032
  • 1 X external examination -duration 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Homework:

This is set weekly and consists of various tasks based on classroom learning. These are all in the Knowledge Organiser, distributed to all students at the start of the course and completed in an A5 homework book which are collected weekly for checking by the teacher. Students from the spring term only complete Revision for R032 by producing revision cards, completing examination questions, creating mind maps, and reviewing their set knowledge organiser for their examination unit.
